October Jobless Rate Hits 11.2 Percent

Florida's unemployment rate continued its steady climb in October hitting 11.2 percent. The state Agency for Workforce Innovation announced the October unemployment figures Friday. The statewide jobless rate is up by a tenth of a point from September's 11.1 percent. While the monthly figure was practically unchanged, it remained a full percentage point above the national average of 10.2 percent and is 4.5 percent higher than the same month last year. The unemployment rate is the highest it's been since June 1975 when the figure also hit 11.2 percent. The number of unemployed Floridians topped 1 million in September and it remained slightly over that mark in October. In Central Florida, Seminole County had the lowest October jobless rate at 10.5 percent while the rate was highest in Osceola County at 12.8. Orange County's unemployment rate matched the statewide rate of 11.2 percent. Agency for Workforce Innovation Director Cynthia Lorenzo, Florida's top labor official, says she remains optimistic and says she sees signs of a slow economic recovery.
