Earthquake Evacuees Arrive at Orlando Sanford

January 20, 2010 Orlando-Sanford International Airport has become a major operations hub for volunteer relief organizations and state, federal and county agencies welcoming Haitian earthquake evacuees arriving in Florida. Orlando-Sanford is one of the closest American airports to the island and, unlike Miami, Tampa and Orlando International Airports, it is relatively un-crowded and has room for the incoming flights and for the evacuee reception center. The evacuees are arriving on military and commercial jets and on rescue flights sponsored by relief organizations. As of early Wednesday morning, more than 2,500 evacuees have arrived at Orlando-Sanford. Most are American citizens who were in Haiti at the time of the disaster. Others are Haitian nationals, including orphaned and injured children traveling alone. Governor Charlie Crist is scheduled to tour the emergency operations center at Orlando-Sanford this afternoon. The governor will visit some of the earthquake survivors and confer with emergency operations personnel. He will also welcome search and rescue teams returning from Haiti. Governor Crist will be joined by Major General Douglas Burnett of the Florida National Guard and Department of Children and Families Secretary George Sheldon. WMFE's Tom Parkinson spoke with Elizabeth Arenas of the Florida Department of Children and Families from the operations center at Orlando-Sanford International Airport.
