Orange School Board Approves Desegregation Settlement

The Orange County School District's nearly half-century of federal court supervision may soon be over. The board voted unanimously last night to approve a settlement in a case that dates to 1962 when eight black families sued to desegregate the county's public schools. Among other details, the agreement will speed up renovations for some schools in Orlando, adjust school zones to achieve more diversity and set new goals for hiring minority teachers. Next, the agreement goes to a federal judge sometime in the spring. If the judge declares that Orange County has unitary status, federal court supervision of the district will end.
