Orange County NAACP Head Discusses School Settlement

The Orange County School District's nearly half-century of federal court supervision may soon be over. The county school board voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve a settlement in a case that dates to 1962 when eight black families sued to desegregate the county's public schools. The settlement will go to a federal judge sometime in the spring. If the judge declares that Orange County has unitary status, federal court supervision of the district will end. The NAACP has been involved in the suit since its beginning and the group was involved in negotiating the settlement reached this week. WMFE spoke with Rev. Randolph Bracy, president of the Orange County branch of the NAACP. He has been involved in the Orange County desegregation issue for many years. I asked Rev. Bracy to outline some of the issues in the suit and discuss how the proposed settlement will address those issues.
