EPA Holds Public Hearing on New Water Rules

Environmentalists say a proposal that would set new limits on farm and urban runoff is needed to clean up Florida's polluted water and is long overdue. But business and agriculture leaders say that compliance would be too costly and a set back for Florida's economy. Both sides are presenting their arguments today in Tallahassee at the first of several hearings the federal Environmental Protection Agency is holding this week on the proposal. Environmentalists say pollution from run-off is causing algae blooms that have clogged lakes, rivers and springs. They say the pollution is seeping into the aquifer and threatening the state's water supply. Business groups say implementing the new rules would be too costly and would cripple Florida's efforts to compete with businesses in states with less stringent rules. Two hearings, one in the afternoon and another in the evening, are scheduled for Wednesday at the Crowne Plaza Orlando Universal Hotel.
