Crist Leads in New Senate Race Poll

July 20, 2010 - Gov. Charlie Crist's decision to leave the Republican Party and run for Senate as an independent seems to be working in his favor. A new poll shows him ahead of all his likely opponents.

The latest Pubic Policy Poll shows, in a three way race between Crist, Democratic Congressman Kendrick Meek and Republican candidate Marco Rubio, Crist leads with 35% to 29% for Rubio.
17% say they would vote for Meek.
If Florida Democrats nominate Jeff Greene in the August primary, Crist’s lead jumps to 38% with 13% for Greene. Rubio still gets 29% in that scenario.
The number of respondents favoring Crist has jumped by 8 points since the last Public Policy Poll on the race in March.
The pollsters say 52% of the respondents backing Crist identify themselves as Democrats.
Crist upset many Republicans when he announced in April that he would continue his run for the Senate without party affiliation.
Public Policy Polling surveyed 900 Floridians late last week.
