Orange County Schools May Ask Voters for Tax Hike

July 23, 2010 -- The Orange County School Board may ask voters to consider a tax increase in November to help fill a looming gap in school funding. Public schools are facing a big drop-off in funding for the 2011-2012 academic year, when federal stimulus money runs out.

Florida lawmakers this year gave school districts the option of asking voters for property tax hikes to fill the hole.  The Orange County School board decided Thursday night to take public comment on a possible November referendum on the topic.  That public hearing will be at the board’s regular meeting next Tuesday.

Orange County warns that without the extra funding the district could have to cut academic programs, teachers, support staff, athletics, student activities, and more.
