United Nations Scientists Add Florida Everglades to Endangered List

July 30, 2010 --The United Nations has added Florida's Everglades National Park to its list of World Heritage sites in danger. The Everglades is home to 20 endangered species, and is making its second appearance on the list.

The U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization first placed the Everglades on the list in 1993, and the site remained there until 2007. UNESCO reported that the park’s 14-year stay was prompted by the large amounts of water being diverted to cities. Today, they announced they were adding the site again for the same reason.

Being on the danger list means the site is eligible for immediate help from the World Heritage Fund.

During today’s meeting in Brasilia, Brazil, UNESCO also added the rain forests of Madagascar to the list. They said illegal logging and poaching are a threat to the rare lemurs that live in Madagascar’s Atsinanana rain forests.
