School Grades Drop Statewide

August 6, 2010 -- The state released letter grades today for Florida elementary and middle schools and for school districts. The number of A or B rated schools was down thirteen percent, compared to last year.

School superintendants asked the state to delay the release because of concerns about the accuracy of this year’s scores on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.  The FCAT is used to calculate school grades.  The state Department of Education says two independent audits showed the scores were within historical norms, but local school officials are still skeptical.

In Central Florida, the number of A and B schools was down too, but only Volusia County’s district grade dropped, from an A to a B.
