Rain Could Dampen Election Turnout

August 24, 2010 - Orange County Supervisor of Elections Bill Cowles says stormy weather in Central Florida could keep people away from the polls today. Cowles was predicting a turnout of around 20% for today's primary election, but he tells 90.7's Tom Parkinson the rain could push that number down into the teens.

More than 59,000 people in Orange County voted early or by absentee ballot.  Cowles says primary elections in off years usually have low turnout, but he urges people to go to the polls, since some nonpartisan elections like Orange County Mayor and School Board Chair could be decided today if any candidate gets more than 50% of the vote.

The polls close at 7pm.  90.7 FM will have live updates every hour starting at 7 until results in all the big races are known.
