Milk Party Gets Moving for Florida's Kids

September 6, 2010 | WMFE - Labor Day marked the first of 15 rallies by the Children's Movement of Florida. Also known as the Milk Party, the bipartisan effort seeks to invest more in kids, and is working to turn out major numbers at the rallies to demonstrate that voters agree.

The first rally was in Pensacola Monday, followed by a community meeting in Panama City Tuesday morning and a rally in Tallahassee Tuesday night.  Then it’s on to Gainesville Wednesday.

Former Education Commissioner Betty Castor, one of the organizers, predicts the rallies will draw crowds and, in turn, policymakers.

“Any candidate who sees a large group and senses that people feel very strongly about these issues, and as the intensity and the size of our group grows, there’s no doubt in my mind that candidates will want to be in their midst,” says Castor.

Florida ranks poorly for most indicators of children’s health and education, coming in 49th in the nation in percentage of uninsured children.

The Milk Party is holding a gubernatorial debate on kids’ issues on October 16th, with Democrat Alex Sink confirmed and Republican Rick Scott yet to decide.
