Republicans Sweep Big Florida Races But Governor Still Too Close to Call

November 2, 2010 | WMFE - Republicans have won Florida's U.S. Senate race and three state Cabinet posts. The GOP has also recaptured two closely-watched Congressional seats in Central Florida. But the governor's race is coming down to the wire.

At this point in the Florida Governor’s race Republican Rick Scott leads Democrat Alex Sink by only two percentage points.  The state’s other big contests, however, have been fairly decisive, and the GOP has come out on top.

Republican Marco Rubio, a former State House Speaker, captured the state’s open U.S. Senate seat with close to fifty percent of the vote.  His victory followed a tough three-way race with Independent Governor Charlie Crist and Democratic Congressman Kendrick Meek.

Central Florida’s two Congressional freshman Democrats both lost their seats tonight.  Alan Grayson of Orlando was ousted by Republican Daniel Webster, and Space Coast Representative Suzanne Kosmas lost to Republican Sandy Adams.

In the state Cabinet, Pam Bondi defeated Dan Gelber to become the next state Attorney General; Republican Jeff Atwater won his bid for state Chief Financial Officer over Loranne Ausley; and retiring Republican Congressman Adam Putnam is poised to become the next state Agriculture Commissioner after his win over Democrat Scott Maddox.

On the local level, the Orange County Mayor’s race was decided early in the night.  Former County Commissioner Teresa Jacobs defeated current Commissioner Bill Segal, 66% to 32%.  The race is officially nonpartisan, but Jacobs is a Republican and Segal is a Democrat.
