Three hundred registered nurses at Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford are now part of the National Nurses Organizing Committee of Florida. It’s an affiliate of National Nurses United, which calls itself the country’s biggest professional association of registered nurses.

Nurse Karyn Hayduk says the union will help advocate for improved benefits and compensation and safe patient-to-nurse ratios.

"Instead of having one or two voices advocating for our patients, we will have 155,000 voices all across the country that are advocating for the same issues,” Hayduk said.

Last week, 550 nurses at Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee decided to also join the union. Nurses at three more Florida hospitals are scheduled to take union votes in the coming weeks.
