Hurricane Experts Meet in Miami

February 28 2011 | WMFE - Hurricane experts are gathering in Miami today to discuss their forecasts for the upcoming Atlantic Hurricane Season. The season starts June 1st and runs through November 30th.

Federal, state and local officials will confer with academic researchers to review the nation’s hurricane forecasting system and consider recommendations to improve the program.
The 2010 hurricane season was one of the busiest on record with 19 named storms, including 12 hurricanes.
Strong storms wreaked havoc in Haiti, Mexico and the Caribbean islands but no major hurricane made landfall on the U.S. mainland in 2010 for the fifth straight year.
The hurricane experts at Colorado State University released their preliminary forecast in December. It calls for 17 named storms including 9 hurricanes with 5 of them expected to be major. Colorado State’s revised forecast is due in April.
The annual Interdepartmental Hurricane Conference continues through Thursday.
