Hank Fishkind March 15 - Deeper Port Will Help South Florida

March 15, 2011 | WMFE - Florida Governor Rick Scott has announced an ambitious plan to improve the Port of Miami. The plan is to dredge the port to a depth of 50 feet so that the, much larger, New Panamax ships can unload cargo there once the expansion of the Panama Canal is completed in 2014.

Gov. Scott says the port project is a better use of government money than the high-speed rail line that was supposed to be built between Orlando and Tampa - the governor recently killed that project when he rejected a federal grant that was supposed to pay for most of the construction.
Scott says the port dredging project will create 33,000 jobs.
90.7 economic analyst Hank Fishkind says he’s not sure about that number. He generally likes the port improvement plan, although he says, while it will help Miami, it won’t do much to boost the economy in Central Florida or the rest of the state.
