State House Considers Election Changes

April 21, 2011 | WMFE - The State House of Representatives Major is discussing legislation that would make major changes in Florida's election laws.

The measures would shorten early voting periods and stop voters from making address or name changes on Election Day.  The proposals would also restrict voter registration by third-party organizations such as the League of Women Voters.

Leon County Elections Supervisor Ion Sancho said Florida is not the only state considering such changes.

“Every state that has a Republican legislature is doing this, from Maine to Florida.” Sancho said. “There is a Legislative Exchange Commission that has come up with a so-called ‘model law’ and this model law is nothing but voter suppression.”

Supporters of the legislation say it’s needed to give more credibility to the electoral process and to prevent voter fraud.
