The Wait is Over for SunRail Supporters July 18, 2011 | WMFE - US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is expected in Orlando today at a kick-off event for the new Sunrail commuter train. The groundbreaking ceremony will include the signing of a Federal funding agreement for the project. The list of dignitaries expected at the kickoff includes Congressman John Mica, a longtime SunRail supporter; Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer who fought for the train in the state legislature and state Transportation Secretary Ananth Prassad who visited Central Florida on a Sunrail tour last month. Federal Transit Administration chief Peter Rogoff will be on hand to sign the Federal funding papers. Federal dollars are covering 50% of the construction costs for phase I of the project. The state will pay 25% of the capital costs; the remaining quarter will come from local partners: Volusia, Seminole, Orange, and Osceola Counties along with the City of Orlando. Contracts were also approved last week for locomotive design and building. Sunrail is expected to be running by 2014.
