Intersection Segment | Is commercial space travel the next step?


July 20, 2011| Space shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to land early tomorrow morning at Kennedy Space Center, bringing an end to NASA's shuttle program. The historic milestone leaves many people asking what's next for American space travel. Private space company Virgin Galactic envisions hundreds of trips to space every year, with paying tourists among the passengers. The firm will launch its spaceships from Spaceport America, the country's first facility built specifically for commercial space travel. Unfortunately for Florida, the spaceport is in New Mexico. This week on Intersection 90.7's Mark Simpson talks with George Whitesides, chief executive officer of Virgin Galactic, about the company's space tourism venture ... and about why Kennedy Space Center is not in its immediate business plan.
