Atlantis Lands Safely, Shuttle Program Ends

July 21, 2011 | WMFE - Space Shuttle Atlantis rolled to a stop at 5:57am under a starry sky at Kennedy Space Center. The perfect landing brought an end to NASA's space shuttle program.

LISTEN TO WMFE'S LIVE COVERAGE OF THE LANDING.

This 135th shuttle flight was NASA's last, after 30 years of shuttle missions.  Atlantis spent thirteen days in space and delivered a year's worth of supplies to the International Space Station.  The station itself was visible in the night sky over Kennedy Space Center just minutes before Atlantis touched down.

NASA plans an appreciation ceremony today to thank the thousands of Kennedy Space Center employees who work on the shuttle program.  About 2,000 of them will start losing their jobs as early as tomorrow.  A total of 9,000 shuttle workers are expected to be laid off.
