Gov. Scott: Debt Default Would have No Immediate Effect

July 29, 2011 | WMFE - Gov. Rick Scott says he isn't worried about the effects that a default by the federal government might have on Florida. The governor says there would be no serious immediate problems.

Most state agencies reported to the governor’s office this week that they could get by in the short run if Congress fails to come up with a solution on the nation's debt ceiling before the August 2nd deadline.
But they say it wouldn't take long before they begin to run out of money.
The Florida National Guard says it would eliminate monthly drills immediately if the nation defaults. Also, the state’s court system would be unable to make its payroll if the shutdown lasts past Aug. 22nd.
Many Florida residents depend on Social Security and Medicare as a lifeline. Advocates for Florida’s seniors say any delay in payments could mean some people will have no money for food or medicine and some could be forced out of their homes.
