Notices of Proposed Property Taxes for this year are being sent out this week. Orange County Property Appraiser Bill Donegan points out it’s just a notice, and not yet a bill…but that’s where the good news ends.

“There’ll be a slight increase in taxes for the average homeowner – about $65 per $100,000 worth of value,” says Donegan. “It’ll be up a little bit and values will be down a little bit.”

Donegan says the increase is largely due to the voter-approved one mill increase to the local school millage rate. That translates to a proposed 30% increase over last year’s rate.

Meanwhile, Donegan says, the county has lost close to $27 billion in value.

But he expects that decline to level off sometime soon.
