Florida Gets Federal Money to Combat Doctor Shortage

August 17, 2011 | WMFE - Florida is getting 325 new federally-funded hospital residency slots to help alleviate a doctor shortage in the state.

US Senator Bill Nelson said Wednesday that the additional positions were approved by the federal agency that oversees Medicare and Medicaid.

Nelson said Florida is getting more new residencies than any other state. He added the residency positions will help with the physician shortage because doctors tend to stay where they train.

While sixteen Florida hospitals are gaining slots, about a half-dozen are losing positions because they consistently didn't need or fill them.

The hospital gaining the most positions is Tallahassee Memorial at 78. Florida Hospital in Orlando is second at 69.

Hospitals in Hialeah and Fort Lauderdale are also receiving a high number of new residencies.
