Hurricane Experts Watching the South Atlantic

Aug. 29, 2011 | WMFE - Forecasters are watching a tropical depression far out in the Atlantic that is expected to become a tropical storm later today and possibly a hurricane by Friday.

Tropical Depression 12 appeared in the eastern Atlantic early Monday morning and it’s expected grow into Tropical Storm Katia.
The National Hurricane Center says the system is about 400 miles south-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands with winds of 35 mph.

Computer models show the system becoming a hurricane later in the week but forecasters say it’s too early to know if the storm will head toward the U.S. or out to sea.
Katia is the name that replaced Katrina in the rotating roster of storm names. The name Katrina was retired after the catastrophic damage from the last Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Meanwhile, the former Tropical Storm Jose appears to be losing strength as it moves north of Bermuda and is now a tropical depression.
