UCF Students Vote for Alcohol Amnesty

September 29 2011 | WMFE - At the University of Central Florida Wednesday night students voted in favor of creating a new policy to encourage reporting alcohol related emergencies. The vote was held as part of this week's student government association elections. The medical amnesty concept would protect students from punishment if they seek medical help for someone who drinks too much alcohol. .

About 4,100 students voted in the election, 80% answered yes to a ballot question on creating an "alcohol emergency".

The University of Florida in Gainesville has an alcohol amnesty policy.  The scope of such policies varies from school to school. Some include rules covering illegal drug overdoses, however UCF students are focusing on a rule that would deal with only alcohol.

Students began considering the issue after 18 year old U-C-F student Ann Hefferin died after attending a fraternity party.

Authorities have not yet determined what caused Hefferin’s death.

Next students hope to meet with UCF adminstrators to draft a policy.
