Governor Rolls Out Legislative Priorities in Orlando

Oct. 12, 2011 | WMFE - Gov. Rick Scott unveiled part of his legislative agenda at a manufacturing company in Longwood this morning. His goals include reducing business regulations and permits, cutting taxes, and changing Florida's unemployment system.

Governor Scott says his top priority will be asking lawmakers to continue eliminating, what he calls, burdensome regulations on businesses.
The governor says he wants to reduce corporate taxes substantially to encourage job growth.

He also wants to shift education in Florida to focus on core subjects such as science, engineering and mathematics.

Under Scott's vision, the state’s unemployment system will be transformed into, what he calls, a “Re-employment” system.
It would require anyone collecting unemployment compensation to participate in a retraining program. Scott says the job market is rapidly changing and many Floridians don’t have the skills that employers now demand.
