Nelson Calls for Tough Action Against Iran

Oct. 13, 2011 | WMFE - U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, is calling for tough action against Iran because of an alleged plot to bomb a restaurant in Washington.

In a speech on the Senate floor Wednesday, Nelson called for the Obama administration "to make it very clear" Iran would be punished. Sen. Nelson is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The Justice Department is accusing Iranian operatives of complicity in the plot. The scheme apparently involved hiring a hit man from the Mexican drug cartel to kill a Saudi diplomat with a bomb attack in Washington.

“This bomber said they want that guy done even if a hundred go with him.”
Nelson said. “These are the words of blood-thirsty people.”

Iran has denied the charges.

The Obama Administration is looking at new sanctions against Iran. Nelson supports those, but hinted in his floor speech that he wants them to go farther.
