Florida Law Enforcement Releases Hate Crime Report for 2010


Dec 27, 2011 | WMFE - New records from Florida's attorney general say that 149 hate crimes were committed across the state in 2010. The annual report was released Tuesday. It includes a breakdown of the types of hate crimes committed throughout Florida.

The report says most of the recorded hate crimes – 46 percent of them – were racially motivated, while 21.5 percent were reactions to sexual orientation. Religious beliefs were cited as third highest on the list at 19.5 percent, and ethnicity, 12.7 percent.

Attorney General Pam Bondi says the hate crimes were reported by local law enforcement agencies throughout the state that provide data to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Florida reported 148 hate crimes in 2009. That was the lowest number since the state began tracking them in 1990.

Hate crime reports peaked in 1992 with 395 cases.
