NASA's administrator, Charlie Bolden, says the agency's manned space exploration program is critical for the economic health of the space coast. Bolden toured the Kennedy Space Center today, where he spoke to staff about President Obama's 2013 budget request. 90.7's Matthew Peddie has more.

NASA's Orion Capsule

The 2013 budget request of 17.7 billion dollars is slightly less than what NASA got last year, but Charlie Bolden says in these austere times, it should be enough to support the agency’s aims- which include laying the foundation to send astronauts into space on the Orion capsule by 2021.

Standing in front of a mock up of the four man spacecraft, Bolden said the Orion program is already starting to bring high tech jobs back to Kennedy.

“The quicker we can start assembling and building vehicles here, the better it’s going to be for the economic viability of this community and for the spirit of the people. If you ask me, that’s the critical part.”

Bolden added that he’d also be doing all he can to ensure Congress gives full funding to the Commercial Crew program- which aims to send US astronauts to the International Space Station by 2017.
