Mica: VA Hospital Delays Hurt Veterans, Taxpayers

Completion of Orlando's new VA hospital at Lake Nona could be delayed up to a year. The new facility was set to open its doors this fall, but the House Veterans Affairs Committee was told this week that it will be summer 2013 at the earliest.

Congressman John Mica asked for an inquiry into construction delays.

He says the 665 million dollar project is likely to be more than 100 million dollars over budget.

“We’ve asked the committee on veterans affairs in the house to investigate the matter and we want everyone held responsible, but most importantly we want the veterans hospital open for our veterans,” he said.

Mica says a slow communications process and delays waiting for VA approval slowed things down.

“Final design wasn’t handed to the contractors until just a couple of weeks ago, so it’s hard for them to be held liable for VA not having its act together.”

The Winter Park Republican says the VA needs to take a closer look at how it manages big projects.
