George Zimmerman to Plead Not Guilty

George Zimmerman's new attorney Mark O'Mara says his client will plead not guilty to second degree murder charges filed Wednesday evening in the death of Trayvon Martin. State prosecutor Angela Corey announced the charges in Jacksonville.

Zimmerman was transported late Wednesday to the custody of the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

Shortly after the charges were announced Sanford Mayor Jeff Tripplett asked the community for continued calm and healing in the days to come.

Zimmerman said that he acted in self defence when he shot and killed unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin in Sanford in February.

Special Prosecutor Corey said Zimmerman will be in court within 24 hours.

She said authorities did not come to the decision to charge him with second degree murder lightly, nor was it based on public pressure.

Speaking in Washington DC, Reverend Al Sharpton thanked the supporters of the Martin family who had marched in protest after the Sanford police department did not arrest Zimmerman.

However, Sharpton said it is not a night for celebration.

He said Zimmerman deserves a fair trial.
