New Task Force Meets in Orlando to Tackle University Budget Crunch

A new panel has been formed to seek solutions for a crisis in the funding of facilities and infrastructure at all eleven state universities. Its first meeting will be a two-day summit in Orlando beginning April 30th.

University of West Florida President Judy Bense will chair the panel, which also includes Florida International University’s president, other college administrators, and one student.

Florida relies mainly on utility taxes to fund the construction and restoration of public schools, college and universities, but that money has declined in recent years. The universities need up to $400 million dollars annually, but lawmakers appropriated less than $9 million for the budget year beginning July 1st.
