Zimmerman's Attorney Delays Asking for Discovery

Attorney Mark O'Mara says he won't apply for evidence from the prosecutor until after he files motions to protect the identities of witnesses. O'Mara and his legal team say they are concerned about releasing witness information to the general public. George Zimmerman claimed he acted in self defense when he shot and killed unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in February. He was arrested and charged with second degree murder in April and is currently on bail awaiting trial.

O’Mara says the public’s right to know about the case must be balanced with witness rights.

Florida law requires the prosecution to give its evidence to the defense 15 days after the defense asks for it. The news media and public can then see it.

A message posted online by O’Mara and his legal team reads “No good purpose will be served by a media frenzy directed at witnesses.”

O’Mara says it’s up to him to decide when to ask for the evidence, and he says prosecutor Angela Corey isn’t breaking any rules by waiting until motions are filed to protect witness identities.

Zimmerman’s legal team has created a new website, facebook page and twitter account for their client. O’Mara says the social media sites will raise money for George Zimmerman's defense and discredit phony websites.
