Thirteen Charged in Robert Champion FAMU Hazing Death  May 2, 2012 | WMFE - Thirteen people have been charged in the November hazing death of Florida A & M University drum major Robert Champion. The 26-year-old died from a beating by fellow marching band members after performing at the annual Florida Classic game in Orlando.
[Image: Robert Champion] Orange County State Attorney Lawson Lamar announced the charges after a five-month investigation, saying the evidence supports what he calls “homicide by hazing”. “His death is not linked to one sole strike, but is attributed to multiple blows,” said Lamar. Eleven people will face the felony charge of hazing resulting in death. Champion’s case has exposed what's being called a culture of hazing at the Tallahassee university – four students were arrested in January for a separate hazing, and 20 misdemeanor counts for the hazing of other individuals were also filed. |
