Myers Wants to "Build Bridges" between Sanford and Police

Sanford's new interim police chief says he'll try to restore the community's trust in the troubled department in the wake of controversy over their handing of the investigation into the shooting of Trayvon Martin. Richard Myers will have up to five months to set things straight.

Myers, who led several police departments in his 35 year career, including the Colorado Springs police department, spoke at a press conference outside Sanford City Hall friday. He said he’ll conduct an A to Z review of the Sanford police department’s operations and people.

That will include meeting with the police chief Bill Lee, who stepped aside temporarily in march. Lee is currently on administrative leave.

Myers said he also wants to reach out to people in the community who feel disenfranchised.

“We have a chance to work collectively and heal wounds that have been left untreated long before this tragedy," he said.

Myers has been appointed for three to five months while an investigation is underway into Chief Lee’s handing of the Martin case.
