Orange County Commission Approves Domestic Partner Registry

May 22, 2012 | WMFE - Orange County lawmakers have approved a domestic partner registry similar to the one designed for same-sex and unmarried couples in the City of Orlando.

After hearing from both supporters and opponents in a public meeting Tuesday, Orange County commissioners voted 6-to-1 in favor of the Health, Education, and Life Protection ordinance, or the "HELP" ordinance. Commissioner Fred Brummer cast the dissenting vote.

The ordinance creates a countywide domestic partner registry similar to the one approved by the City of Orlando in December. It will grant registered unmarried partners some of the legal and medical rights that married couples have, like the ability to visit one another in the hospital and to handle end-of-life decisions.

The county’s version will also allow registrants to assign those rights to a person not living with them, such as a friend or neighbor.
