May 30, 2012 | WMFE - FCAT writing scores released this month were shockingly low. State educators called an emergency meeting where they lowered the passing grade so school funding would not be drastically affected. This week on Intersection 90.7's Mark Simpson talked with Kathleen Shanahan, chairwoman of the state Board of Education, and Winter Park High School physics teacher Gayle Hodges about why the scores were so low and their affect on public education in Florida. Mike Cahill, president of the Orange County teachers' union, began the conversation by explaining why the union opposes what they call overzealous standardized testing.
