Federal and State Officials Advise Early Hurricane Prep

June 1, 2012 | WMFE - It's June 1st and that means the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. Federal and state officials gathered in Miami today urging Floridians to prepare early.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano joined Federal Emergency Management Agency head Craig Fugate and Florida Gov. Rick Scott at the National Hurricane Center in Miami with a message to prepare for hurricanes beforehand.

The officials say it’s wise to assemble a kit with hurricane emergency supplies now and not wait until a storm is approaching.

Although the hurricane season officially begins today and runs through November 30th, the season has already seen two named storms.

Tropical Storm Alberto formed off the coast of South Carolina on May 19 and dissipated a few days later. On Memorial Day, Tropical Storm Beryl came ashore at Jacksonville Beach dumping 10 inches of rain in some parts of north Florida and knocking out electric power for tens of thousands.
