League of Women Voters and Rock the Vote in Orlando: Will They Register Florida Voters Again?

Two groups who have been battling the state of Florida's new election laws are speaking after a federal judge struck down part of the legislation last week. The League of Women Voters and Rock the Vote could be announcing a new strategy Wednesday in Orlando.

The groups were two of the voter registration organizations that pulled their volunteer efforts out of Florida after the law passed last year. Among other things, the law requires that all new voter registrations be turned in to the Supervisor of Elections office within 48 hours, or a $1,000 fine would be imposed.

President of the League of Women Voters Deirdre Macnab says that was too burdensome. “It really created such an administrative requirement with punitive sanctions and unreasonable timelines that it basically drowned our volunteer effort,” she explains.

Last week, a federal judge said the 48-hour requirement put “harsh and impractical” restrictions on groups like Macnab’s. He struck that provision down along with a number of others. Macnab says her organization and Rock the Vote are reviewing the judge’s decision and will announce their plans for Florida at their joint press conference Wednesday.

“It is certainly our hope to be able to really very quickly make up lost ground if we are able to proceed,” Macnab says.
