Date Set for George Zimmerman's New Bond Hearing  June 7, 2012 | WMFE - A date has been set for a new bond hearing for George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer charged in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager. The hearing is scheduled for June 29th. Zimmerman returned to jail Sunday after a Seminole County judge revoked his $150,000 bond. The judge agreed with the prosecutor’s claim that Zimmerman and his wife deceived the court during his first bond hearing in April. Shellie Zimmerman had testified that the couple had limited funds for bail because she was a full-time student and her husband wasn't working. In fact, prosecutors say, Zimmerman had raised about $200,000 in donations from a website he created and appeared to be advising his wife to hide it before the hearing. Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder for shooting 17-year-old Trayvon Martin during a confrontation in a Sanford gated community where Zimmerman lived and Martin was visiting family. He has pleaded not guilty and is claiming self-defense, while critics accuse him of racial profiling. The incident and the Sanford Police Department’s initial decision not to arrest Zimmerman sparked marches and protests across the country, many in Sanford itself. This evening, a national mentoring group is holding an event at the Sanford Civic Center called “A Night of Healing,” featuring appearances by local lawmakers, attorneys, pastors and professors. |
