Gov. Bush tells Educators, Business Leaders: Support New Education Standards

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush says business leaders need to do more to support tough new education standards being rolled out across the country.

Governor Bush spoke to educators and business groups at a conference in Orlando Monday, outlining what he said is a crisis in K through 12 education that needs to be fixed.

He says the new common core standards will help improve college readiness, but only if people support their implementation.

Bush says that includes governors, state school officers and business leaders.

“The business community I think can play a critical role in this, because they’re going to be the beneficiaries of having the workforce here in the United States be capable of being world class.”

Bush says there’s broad, bipartisan support for common core standards now, but he warned there could be pushback if student grades slump once the standards are implemented.

Common core state standards, which cover English and Math, will be implemented in 46 states by 2013.
