Winter Park republican John Mica says building a rail connection to Port Canaveral would enhance the port as a center for commerce and tourism. Port dredging and expansion projects in Jacksonville and Miami received a boost last week from the Obama administration, and now Mica says Port Canaveral could be next.

Congressman Mica, who chairs the US House transportation committee, says while the port projects in Miami and Jacksonville are important to Florida and the US, he’s turning his focus to Port Canaveral.

He says connecting a rail line to the port would be a major improvement.

“Bringing rail to the port is so important to make Canaveral not only a tourism center but also a commercial center," says Mica.

"We need rail right to the port, every one of these ports, so that we don’t put heavy loads on our highways.”

Mica says a rail line would cross over some NASA and Department of Defense land.

He says he is convening a meeting next week of stakeholders including State authorities, port and rail freight companies and NASA.
