With several major transportation projects in development or proposed in Orlando, the city faces a big planning challenge. City officials recently paid a visit to South Florida to see how Miami is working to accommodate growing transportation needs.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer toured the Miami Intermodal Center, a major transit hub near the city’s international airport which incorporates intercity rail, light rail, and buses.

Orlando city transportation policy advisor Christine Kefauver joined Mayor Dyer on the tour. She says after looking at Miami’s intermodal center she believes Central Florida is on the right track with its planning.

“Our intermodal center is further down the road, but I don’t see that there’s anything above and beyond to say that we’ve not planned appropriately," said Kefauver.

"It’s nice to see this kind of stuff in use,” she added.

Mayor Dyer serves on the boards of the Lynx bus service, Orlando International Airport, and the SunRail commuter rail project, and Kefauver says it was important for him to get a first hand look at a multi modal transport hub.

Orlando International Airport has future plans for an intermodal station which could incorporate rail, bus and rental car connections.
