Department of Justice Oversees Elections in Five Florida Counties

Aug 13, 2012 | WMFE - Federal authorities say they will be monitoring elections in five of Florida counties Tuesday. Two of those counties are in Central Florida.

The US Department of Justice announced on Monday that its employees will visit polling places in Osceola and Polk counties during Tuesday's primary election. They will also visit Collier, Hendry, and Lee counties.

Department observers will check to make sure county election workers are following federal election laws. The agency says officials will be checking, among other things, that those five counties are providing language assistance in Spanish, as required.

Collier and Lee counties recently carried out a purge of potential non-US citizens from its voting rolls, though other counties raised questions about the accuracy of a list put together by state officials.

The US Department of Justice recently sent subpoenas to nine Florida counties seeking information about how counties handled the state push to identify and remove potentially ineligible voters.
