Florida Lawmakers Ask Gov. Scott to Reconsider New Early Voting Rules  August 20, 2012 | WMFE - Florida Governor Rick Scott is being asked to extend the number of early voting days in all counties. The move comes after a court ruling appears to limit restrictions passed by the legislature. A group of state lawmakers including Democratic Florida Senator Arthenia Joyner of Tampa showed up Monday at Scott's office to discuss the issue of early voting. A federal court ruled last week that new restrictions on early voting passed last year cannot take effect in the five counties covered by federal voting laws. The court says the changes, which are already in effect in Florida’s other 62 counties, could hurt minority participation. Joyner wants Scott to order counties to have up to fourteen days of early voting. State officials are asking the five covered counties to come up with a plan to hold eight days of early voting, but the election supervisor for one of them – Monroe County – is opposing the move. |
