Progress Energy Florida Wants to Lower Rates for Customers

August 31, 2012 | WMFE - Progress Energy Florida is seeking a six percent reduction in rates for residential customers next year. The utility says lower fuel and power costs are making the rate decrease possible.

Progress filed paperwork with the Florida Public Service Commission Friday, asking permission to implement the rate cut in 2013. The proposal would reduce the average residential bill by more than seven dollars, bringing it down to about $115 per month.

The move comes on the heels of an announcement just over a week ago from the Orlando Utilities Commission, saying its board had approved a five percent rate reduction that will take effect on October 1^st.

Progress Energy serves about 1.6 million homes, businesses and other customers in central and north Florida. The Orlando Utilities Commission provides power and water for about 225,000.
