Sept 26, 2012 | WMFE - A new poll released today shows President Barack Obama opening a wide lead over Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in Florida.

The Quinnipiac University Poll shows the president leading Gov. Romney 53 to 44 percent among likely voters in Florida.

The results represent a substantial gain for the president over the 49 to 46 percent margin in a Quinnipiac poll one month ago.

Poll respondents were split about 50/50 on the question of whether they’re better off now than they were four years ago and more than half now say they believe Mr. Romney’s policies favor wealthier Americans.

A Quinnipiac spokesman says Romney’s best chance to make up lost ground could be in the upcoming presidential debates. The first debate between the two candidates is set for next Wednesday.

The poll, conducted on behalf of CBS News and the New York Times surveyed nearly 12 hundred likely Florida voters between Sept. 18th and 24th. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percent.
