Trial Date Set for George Zimmerman

October 17, 2012 | WMFE - The judge overseeing the former neighborhood watchman's second degree murder case set a starting date for the trial of June 10th, 2013.

Judge Debra Nelson, presiding over the docket hearing in a Sanford courtroom Wednesday, took over the case from Judge Kenneth Lester after defense lawyers complained about comments he made in a bail ruling.

Zimmerman's lawyers say they will likely request a self-defense immunity hearing in April or May.

Zimmerman claims he acted in self defense when he shot unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in February.

If the court agrees with his claim of self defense under Florida's 'Stand Your Ground' law, the second degree murder charge would be dismissed
