Bogus Voter Letters Discovered in Multiple Counties

October 23, 2012 | WMFE - The Florida Department of State says fraudulent letters to voters with phony "Supervisor of Elections" letterheads are being reported in at least 15 Florida counties. The fake letters warn that the recipients are potentially ineligible to vote.

The letters first showed up in Brevard County late last week and more have since turned up in Orange, Volusia, Seminole and other counties. 

Brevard Supervisor of Elections Lori Scott says the letters could easily be mistaken for official correspondence.

“They’re on a letterhead, it has my name and it says ‘Supervisor of Elections’ It looks official.” Scott says.

The letter indicates that the voter’s citizenship is in question and that the recipient is in danger of being removed from the voter rolls.

Scott says this kind of threat is especially troubling so close to a major election.

"Would they be intimidated enough not to not exercise their right to vote?” She asks. "We are 14 days away from a presidential election.”

Scott says all but one of the voters who received the letters in Brevard are registered Republicans.

The Florida Department of State is continuing its investigation of the incidents.
