Sandy Bears Down on Bahamas, Prompts Warnings for Central Florida Coast

October 25, 2012 | WMFE - As of the 11:00am update, the center of Hurricane Sandy is northeast of Cuba. The storm is a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour. It is moving north at 18 miles per hour.

The eastern coast of Florida is now under a tropical storm warning from Flagler Beach south. A tropical storm watch has been issued from north of Flagler Beach to Fernandina Beach. 

The storm crossed eastern Cuba overnight, and is expected to remain a hurricane as it moves through the Bahamas.   

Sandy is still expected to remain well east of Florida’s Atlantic coast, but 30 to 40 mile per hour winds, dangerous surf conditions and some rain squalls are expected through Friday into Saturday morning along Central Florida’s coastal counties as the hurricane continues to move north.  

Forecasters say Central Florida’s interior counties will see windy conditions, too, but they are not expected to reach tropical storm speeds. Rainfall is also expected to be minimal across Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties.
