Brevard County Closes Schools Friday, Braces for Sideswipe from Hurricane Sandy

October 25, 2012 | WMFE - The Brevard County School District has announced schools will be closed Friday, when Hurricane Sandy is expected to draw parallel to Central Florida's east coast. School district officials say child care and after-school activities will also be canceled.

The Volusia County School District says school will remain open Friday, but extracurricular events Friday and Saturday will be canceled.

Brevard and Volusia counties are under the tropical storm warning that stretches from Flagler Beach south along Florida's Atlantic coastline.

A tropical storm watch has been issued from north of Flagler Beach to Fernandina Beach.

Hurricane Sandy is still expected to remain hundreds of miles east of Florida as it takes a northerly track parallel to the U.S. coastline, but meteorologists say the storm still could have some impact on the state. Central Florida’s coastal counties are already reporting five- to six-foot waves, and the dangerous surf conditions are expected to intensify through Friday as Sandy churns by. Isolated storm squalls and 30 to 40 mile per hour winds are also possible for counties like Brevard and Volusia.

Forecasters also predict windy conditions for Central Florida’s interior counties, but they are not expected to reach tropical storm speeds. Rainfall is expected to be minimal across Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties.

As of the 2:00pm update, Hurricane Sandy is about 65 miles south-southwest of Long Island in the Bahamas. The storm’s maximum sustained winds remain at 105 miles per hour. It is moving north at 20 miles per hour, and is expected to remain a hurricane as it moves through the Bahamas late Thursday into early Friday.
